The only life you have to live is your own.

Unraveling

January 17th, 2011 § Leave a Comment

Have you ever felt like you just started taking solid action in the right direction…and then everything seems to unravel?

This is normal, and likely to be expected when you’re growing your business, or growing your life in general.  You see, our subconscious mind likes things to be the same, often dysfunctionally so, and doesn’t care what glorious plans we have for the future.  It will throw wrenches in your plans.  It will cause large important files to vanish into thin air, it will cause cars to overheat, arguments to ensue and internet connections to go completely haywire.

So how do you get around it?  You see the circumstance for what it is.  You embrace it and keep your eye on the end result.  Say you’re trying to write a proposal to speak at a big fitness event.  While writing, you continuously get interrupted.  Where else can you write?  Your computer gets wonky.  Can you borrow a friend’s or visit the library?  The program crashes.  Can you get to yet another computer?  The file disappears completely.  Start again.  Immediately.

Keep the attitude of no. matter. what., breathe, and keep going until you get there.

Annoying?  Yeah.  You get to live your passion as a trainer, create your own business and have the ability to make more than you ever would at a 9 to 5.  Cubicle?  What cubicle?

It’s backwards

If you walk around speaking, thinking and understanding that everyone you meet has no money, everyone you meet will have no money.

If you speak, think, and understand abundance, you will meet potential clients who are self-proclaimed ‘young, overpaid’ and very interested in personal training.

If you speak, think and understand that you are a successful, loving, empowered business owner, you will be!

Just start to feel what you want as if it’s currently true and before you know it, it will be.

Hey, did you ever have that kid in high school who wasn’t ‘anything special’ and then decided to become a cool kid?  They all of a sudden thought they were the shit, walked like they were the shit and talked to everyone like they belonged and then sooner or later, they were just one of the cool kids!

It’s like that..

Start immediately

I hear this a lot…”Well I can’t really start my business yet because I haven’t finished my website.  I haven’t yet completed my degree.  I really don’t know as much as [insert industry guru/leader here].

It’s really ok.  The best thing for you to do is start anyway.  The most important things for you to have at the outset are:

1. A clear idea of who you love helping most and who needs you most.  Be specific, ie you’re the TRX guy, or you help working moms or you teach prenatal or postnatal fitness.  There are SO many specialties out there.

2. A clear idea of what exact benefits your clients receive from working with you.  Perhaps they love trying on clothes again, feel like themselves and can finally stop complaining about how they look!

3. An offering.  Do you train at a studio?  What hours are you available?  What packages do you have available and how much do they cost?

4. A certainty that you can help those who hire you.  You absolutely want to make sure you have the skillset to help them.

From there, roll with it!  Tell people everywhere what you do and figure out the rest as you go.  I know people earning at least $15K a month (likely more by now) who don’t have a website, haven’t yet published a blog and who haven’t yet sent out newsletters. In fact, this person wasn’t on Facebook or Twitter until very recently.  How did this person do it?

Sales are most often, and most effectively made face to face, next most effective is via phone, and least effective is via email or computer.

So take an afternoon for some planning and then get out there and meet people!

If you want some DIY help setting this up, I’ve created “The Courage to Train Yourself” audio.  It’s only $249 and available for 0.4 NASM CECs.  A client of mine recently commented that from start to finish, it’s just dead on.  She was kicking herself wishing she had had this information years ago!  or even last year, or even last month!  Buy it today and get rolling.

Who’s your best success story?

January 14th, 2011 § Leave a Comment

Think about your absolute best client.  Your most successful clients.  The ones who make up your best success stories that you’re so excited to share with others.  What do they have in common?

I bet one of the commonalities is consistency, and also a positive attitude.  They show up on time for each and every workout.  They want to know exactly what’s going to be most effective in helping them reach their goals.  They do cardio outside of sessions and they eat a healthy, balanced diet.  They ask great questions and there is absolutely nothing getting in their way.

The same goes for you in your business.  This is an endurance race, not a sprint.  It’s important for you to have an unwavering optimistic attitude.  An absolute unwillingness for excuses or failure.  A decision that THIS is your time.

You show up for each and every challenge, you ask the necessary questions and gain the tools needed for your success.  Before you know it, someone will be telling your success story.

Flub through sales

January 13th, 2011 § Leave a Comment

The easiest and fastest way to flub yourself through sales is to be confident, passionate, and absolutely fearless.  As Wallace Wattles discusses in “The Science of Getting Rich,” we naturally want to expand and desire to be around those who are in abundance, rich with life, and growing.  Be that person and people will organically want to buy from you.  A big part of the problem…solved.

Free time

January 12th, 2011 § Leave a Comment

Your ability to dig in, be present and make choices will determine to a large extent how much you enjoy your free time.  As a personal trainer and business owner, it will also determine to a large extent whether you have any free time at all.  Choose clarity, abundance, and efficiency.

A disconcerting crunch

January 11th, 2011 § Leave a Comment

Once upon a lunchtime eve (or something like that), I bought some dip at a nearby grocery store.  I was enjoying my dip and all of a sudden I felt a disconcerting crunch.  It was the crunch of plastic and I was glad I didn’t break my tooth!

When I took it to the customer service desk, I really just wanted to make sure nobody else got hurt and expected maybe a $5 credit or so.  They gave me a $50 store credit for the inconvenience!  I still remember it to this day and my fuzzy feelings for the store never took any hit at all.  If anything, I respect them more!

So what’s the message?  Overdeliver.  Let me be more specific.  Overdeliver in a way that doesn’t compromise your well-being and/or your boundaries.

That grocery store is well-established and could very likely afford the $50.  They gained back a huge supporter in the process.
